Art Hill in Forest Park, St. Louis, was decorated with 2,996 flags today. One of each of those who died in the 9/11 attacks.

It was a grand gesture, moving and powerful. At first I regretted the absence of the national flags of the 372 foreign nationals who died, including 67 British citizens, for this was truly an attack on the world. But all died on American soil, and this gave a certain logic to the display.

Ten years later the raw shock has long passed. It is good, though, that the victims of this madness are so remembered.
