Ruth and I took a drive through Lone Elk Park this evening.

This misnamed park is just outside of St. Louis near to Interstate 44. It's very close to an area of suburban sprawl and ugly strip malls, so when you get in it and find a pristine forest surrounding some deep valley ponds, it's a very pleasant contrast.

Apart from the elk, we saw wild turkeys, deer and bison. There were warning signs all over saying being extra careful as it was mating season but few people were paying much attention. The wildlife seemed to take the visitors – and there were quite a few this evening – in stride.A solitary elk lying by the side of a lake with the sun reflecting off the water provided the most striking image of the evening.
