A dragonfly with a Mona Lisa smile.
Taken at Fran and Steve's lovely home on Saturday afternoon.
Amazing what a close-up shot will reveal. This insect almost looks canine with its whiskers and nose.
Here's another couple of shots of the same beast.

First is better for me.

Thanks a lot, Nicolas! :)Yes, it does have a definite helicopter look!
When they fly it looks so graceful!
Now I know why they design helicopters like that. ItΒ΄s a beauty. Great pic, Richard!
Thanks, Michal – yes, I agree! π

Thanks! :)It was the Canon 100-400mm zoom. In the top picture, I used an extension tube to get closer to the dragonfly.
Very cool. What size lens were you using?
How does an extension tube work?

An extension tube allows you to focus closer to your subject than would be possible otherwise. Here's a good explanation.π
All three are great images. The first, I like the best. π
Thanks, Merle – yes, that's the special one, I think.:)
The first pic is awesome. :headbang:Set it as wallpaper on my phone, I'm certain it'll get a few curious stares.
how far were you from the dragonfly when you took the first picture?
WOW! excellent post. I see her smile- and she told you her name was Mona. how ironic!
Really excellent photos, Richard.
selarus – I was about 2 ft away from the insect in the top photo.Glad you like them, selarus, Jill & Star. Jill, I had to get very close to hear her whisper, Mona. Or maybe it was the wind…:)

WoW! Wonderful shots π And extension tube really is a good addition in photographer's tools π
Thank you, Sami! It's a very useful tool. π
Great shots. Really great!
Thank you, Orlando! π
great shots, Richard. – how is the extension tube compare to the 100mm macro?
Thanks, Jon – it's not as good. It's not quite as sharp, and that's largely because you are magnifying any flaws in your lens when you use one. Macro lens are designed to be ultra-sharp from the beginning. Still, it's not bad.:)
Thanks, Richard. much be fun with the tube, as it works with all other lens.:D
