We returned to Wonersh from Slapton today, an even longer journey than usual thanks to the A303 being closed by an accident. During our re-routing through the Somerset countryside, we came across this beautiful herd of Fallow Deer on a country estate. The vacation is nearly over – just one more day in England. It has been excellent, it would hard to ask for more.
Yesterday, we visited Agatha Christie's country estate near Dartmouth, Greenway, a delightful trip that involves a ferry ride from Dartmouth harbour up to the boat landing that lies across the River Dart from Dittisham, home of Fingals Hotel where my sister has been staying. She and her husband took the Dittisham ferry to join us.
The house resembles exactly the sort of country home that is the setting for many Christie mysteries, exuding a between-the-wars ambience that fits in perfectly. As we returned down the Dart, a steam train went past us. It was hard not to believe we had been transported back into that period as I looked at it steaming northward past the Upper Ferry.
