A drive through American Bottom this afternoon.
There were scattered thunderstorms in the area, and I thought I might find an interesting lightning display to photograph.
That was not to be. What was to be was an extraordinary sight that I have never seen before. Two complete rainbows making a double. Amazing. After that, some extraordinarily striking cloud formations. But that double rainbow – wow.
I did not notice it at first, but if you closely at the lower, brighter, rainbow in the bottom photograph, you can see a supernumerary rainbow. Those bands just below the conventional spectrum. I guess I really was lucky on Sunday! Here are the supernumerary bands, somewhat enhanced.

Double rainbows are kinda rare, but becoming more common with all the weird weather going on. One of the benefits, I guess, of our changing climate.Great capture.

Thanks, Star – I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. :)The weather does seem to be getting weirder, doesn't it?

Really nice views. I like the way the road sort of looks like it goes under the rainbow. The St. Louis Rainbow Arch? :DThat third shot reminds me of the big cloud that comes over the top of the mountain in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Well I'm nothing but droll. Literally, droll is it. The base of the rainbow is much wider than the Arch, of course.

Ah; well in that case I'm only 83 percent droll. :lol:Hope the weather is cool for you there, Richard.

I wish it was, Ed, but it's not. Hot and humid, with storms occasionally relieving the stickiness. That's St. Louis summer for you! :awww:
musickna said:
Yes, I'm afraid so. You're much better off in Spokane! π

Sorry to hear that. I remember that in Indiana when it would rain it would only increase the humidity — so even if the temp decreased a bit it usually felt hotter. π¦ And I imagine that it is that way in St. Louis, too — it is all the Midwest.
