The Independent newspaper has been putting up a series of photographs taken during World War One and that have only recently been rediscovered.

Despite extensive efforts, only one person featured in these many photographs has been positively identified adding extra poignancy to these shots of young men most of whom were destined to die violently.

But they are not all of soldiers. A few women feature, as you can see in this photograph.

I find this picture fascinating. The woman's expression suggests an absolute indifference to the soldier resting his hand on her shoulder and pushing his leg towards her. She makes no effort to move towards him. Maybe she is just a model hired by or related to the photographer to add to the scene. The soldier perhaps would like more. Or are they a couple just met and unsure of each other? There's no way of knowing.
