After photographing the Mississippi at the Chain of Rocks Bridge on Saturday, I headed off down Page Avenue into St. Charles, ending up at the riverside Katy Trail State Park.
This gave me a good view of three more Missouri River bridges, the Wabash railway bridge (above, foreground), the Discovery Bridge (above, background) that carries Route 370, and, to the south of me, the Blanchette Memorial Bridge that carries Interstate 70 (below). The pale sun of midday had broken through the cloud by this point, much later in the afternoon, putting a little sparkle into the day. Still very wintry, though, even if it did seem a few degrees warmer than what we had become used to. I was grateful for that.
Great photos, Richard. There is something about bridges that just fascinates me. I used to spend a lot of time on bridge construction sites, and learned a lot about how they're erected. These are some really great ones.
Thank you, Star – as you can tell, I am also fascinated by bridges, indeed (you are right, Linda) by all architecture. The middle picture is a fisheye view (that is why the tree is bent so) of Katy Trail State Park in St. Charles. You can see my camera bag and one of my cameras on the ground. The structure in the foreground in the lower picture is a jetty or ramp leading out to a rusting barge.
And what is the middle picture? Also, what is the structure going out into the river in bottom foreground? Looks like a pier of some kind, but can't make out what it ends on.You love architectural elements do you not?
I think the connection is the Wabash Railroad, Edward.
Is there any connection between the Wabash thing above and the Wabash River (or city) in Indiana-Illinois?
Wow, nice links that you found there, Ed. I never knew much about the Wabash Railway before, now I am glad that I am learning a bit more. 🙂
Hey, the even have their own flag and everything! :DFollowing your link was looking at this too. Most of the pics are in St. Louis. From just skimming it seems that the song Wabash Cannonball is not the same as the train of the same name on the Wabash Railroad, but I might be wrong about that. Thanks for the info.
