I was driving through St. Charles County on a progressively grayer and cloudier afternoon when I came across this sight.
A burning tree stump just off the road. Dead grass and ice in the background – the contrast between the light and heat of the fire and the bleak landscape was most striking.
I stopped the car and walked down to the bonfire. It was giving off a strong heat. Pleasant to stand by on this cool day.
There was no one around looking after the fire that had clearly been set to destroy the old stump. Rather a waste of a good fire, I thought. This eagle, however, seemed perfectly at home on the frozen Mississippi River. Brrrr….
