Very strange. Obama wins the Peace Prize.
More, I think, a measure of how incredibly deeply George Bush alienated the rest of the world, including the Nobel Committee. President Obama has said many welcome conciliatory and cooperative things, but it's surely far too early to judge whether he has had a truly positive effect on world peace? I hope he has – we'll see!

I had to check the date to make sure it wasn't April 1st. This choice has me more than a little puzzled.

I agree with you… there is a huge gap between what is said and what is done.I didnt know what the Nobel Committee would be someone a prize after just a few months of work with no significant impact in the world, rather than being famous.Obama's challenge is to keep up to the prize now.

I never knew you could be awarded such an honor by only talking. Even if the talking comes from the best of intentions.

Yes, it's definitely a very odd thing. I've always tended to believe you should be rewarded for what you've done rather that what you've talked about.

I will share the money with anyone who nominates me! 😀
sanshan said:
If anyone should get the prize it should be me! First of all I live my life in peace and send metta to everyone in the world everyday! I'm also kind to animals and small children. And of course, the money would be really nice. 🙄

😆 Now you just need a nominator!

😆

The deadline for nominations fell about two weeks after Obama was inaugurated. He hadn't even had a chance to pull the blinds in the residence areas of the White House yet.The Nobel Committee has just lost all credibility. And ten to one, Obama nominated himself.

Considering that this man has apologized for my country at every opportunity and to every country he has visited, I am assuming this makes him qualify for a Nobel Peace Prize? Who knew that running your mouth and selling out your country could make you eligible for such an award?
musickna said:
I think it very doubtful that Obama nominated himself, it's not his style. The prize may well cause him a lot of political headaches. It does seem clear that this was political decision by the Norwegians whose world outlook is very much in sympathy with what Obama projects. But it is still too soon, unless you count reversing the popular world opinion of the United States as a pariah as a major achievement. I can't say I do! 🙂
musickna said:
Selling out your country? That's abject nonsense, Linda. Obama has done more to enhance this country's global standing in the few months of office than his predecessor managed in 8 years. Of course, it wasn't that hard given Bush's catastrophic destruction of this country's reputation. Maybe I am glad he won the prize after all! 😆
L2D2 said:
And we will have to agree to disagree on Obama Richard. I don't want any official apologizing for my country.
musickna said:
Oooooh, I'm feisty today. Don't think I'll be winning a peace prize! 😆
musickna said:
Agree to disagree, we will. 🙂
sanshan said:
I heard that too!

I heard that the Obamas' dog pottied on Air Force One. Kinda off topic, but I thought I would mention it.
ricewood said:
By the way, I heard somewhere that Barack Obama himself said that he didn't deserve the prize.

Nice with additional trivia, Edward. You never know when stuff like that might come in handy.
musickna said:
😆 Indeed. Such information could turn out to be priceless!

From today's New York Times. Sums things up very nicely.
