This alarming visage is Bill Isemenger, of the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, during a fascinating lecture about the site and the surrounding American Bottom floodplain.

You can see the channels and oxbow lakes of the region outlined on Bill's shirt, but the effect is altogether a lot more spooky than a short lecture at the Southwestern Illinois Resource Conservation and Development fund raising event that I was photographing would seem to warrant. Fortunately, it soon returned to a more soothing context! 😀
