Caught in the evening sun, this woodpecker is tapping away at a branch high in a tree at the bottom of our garden. I heard its song as I was sitting outside on this warm and soothing Saturday afternoon.
I watched it for a while. It stayed in much the same place. This surprised me a little, but a little later on I found out why.
It has hollowed out a very snug hole for itself to settle and presumably raise a family. Here it poking its head out of its hole to see what going on. Look again at the top photo – you can see the hole just behind the twig close the bird's beak.
