I listened to portions of Obama's speech last night, and, frankly, wasn't quite sure I could believe what I was hearing.
After years of government inaction and a cult of anti-government fostered by the Republican party, the thought of anyone in power actually doing something (other than fight wars or cut taxes) to help the average American in a time of deep crisis seems really strange.
Yet here I was hearing a strongly positive call to reform energy, education and, most importantly, health care. Can I let myself believe that this is not a forlorn hope? After seeing years of bungling and obstructionism by conservative politicians whose lack of true and faithful commitment to competent administration has led to the current sorry mess, how can I not believe that they, yet again, will torpedo any attempts to rid this country of its astonishingly backward social policies?
I want to see results.
