This was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in in Europe. Inedible food (with the exception of breakfast), paper thin walls which made us feel that we were sharing a room with our fellow guests, the most uncomfortable bed you can imagine, shower that didn't deserve the name shower: read a drip of luke-warm water at waist height over a dirty bath. To add insult to injury the alcohol required to survive the experience was ridiculously overpriced in the dingy, unwelcoming and freezing cold bar.

This gloriously intimidating building overlooked Kinlochleven and was accessible only by a narrow one lane road that twisted up a mountain side, or by footpath. My wife hiked there – my mother and I drove.

We only stayed for a drink and sandwich. The place did look bleak and not a little scary in the dark cloud light. Not, I feel, a place to stay.

However, the views were lovely.
