A great selection, Richard. I always wondered about the line that goes something like…and the Chap girls and their silver slips…Is "silver slips" lingerie? Or is it a metaphor for a hypodermic needle (i.e. heroin)? Very poetic, in any case.

You sent me back to my dusty LP collection to solve this one, Edward. According the inner sleeve lyric sheet, it goes:The shrieking of nothing is killing meJust pictures of Jap girls in synthesisAnd I ain't got no money and I ain't got no hairBut the planet is glowing.A bit different. I think I like your line better!! 🙂

Darn. All my images over the years of Bowie hanging out in Chapel Hill with hot rich babes in silver slips and shooting heroin…up in smoke!Never mind! (coulda sworn!)(Strange how that works, huh? I guess we really do deconstuct our own reality to a great extent.)

I know – I've misheard many lyrics in my time (Velvet Underground records are great for that due to the crappily recorded vocals), and sometimes, when finding out the true lyric, wish it really was what I had in my mind. 🙂

Yes, I think that's the interpretation, Deborah. Glad you liked the post! 🙂

I think many times that, Velvet Underground and many more recording companies, do the twist on lyrics on purpose and not out of crappie recorded vocals. We all tend to like more romantic versions than political ones.It is a selling trick.Money does twist things 🙂

so he's writing about the bomb we sent to kill japan rather than the drug lords sent to profit from our weaknesses on addiction . . . . think about it, it is similar in the outcome. been too long since i've listened to bowie. thanks richard.
