A photo from two years ago inspired by Allan's must-read post.

Just why this gun emplacement is sitting on this remote Northern English coastline isn't obvious to me. Any German invasion in that area would have to traverse a lot of the North Sea, whether launched from Norway, Germany or even Denmark. Perhaps it was just there to inhibit any raiding party from a U-Boat.

But there it is, close to the much older fortification of Dunstanburgh Castle and looking quite puny in comparison.
