I spent part of this afternoon in St. Louis city at Food Outreach, a local charity that distributes food to people with cancer and HIV.

It's extremely dismaying to live a society that forces some people who are very sick or dying to rely on handouts for food, but that's the way it is in America.

Mike and Wendy pictured here were two fellow volunteers. I spent most of my time going through bakery goods donated by Panera Bread, sorting the aging bread, bagels and croissants into individual bags for distribution. My co-workers, some of whom were themselves the recipients of the food, were a cheerful and friendly bunch and it felt good to be able to help.

It does not feel good, though, to think about the lives those ill people are living. 😦
