Last week has been one of those intermittant periods when life has gone on much as usual, with the same concerns and involvements, but somehow lacking in spark or any sense of excitement. I can look back on the events at home and work but there is a heaviness about them rather than lightness.

This is not an unusual mood for me in the middle of a St. Louis summer. The relentless heat and humidity – that has only abated today for a brief period and this relief is undoubtedly the reason I am writing this at all – saps my energy and generates a sense of dull conformity with the doings of the day. I function just as before; it's just that I feel much more like a machine than I would like.

I haven't even taken hardly any photographs – as sure a sign as any that my enthusiasms have been squashed.

Not to worry though. With today's change in the weather and the weekend coming up, my vitality is being restored. Also there is a day off next week for the 4th of July and a vacation coming up in the not too distant future. I am certainly ready for that.
