Remember the Ray Bradbury novel about a society where reading was banned and all books burned?
Well, here's an example of the story inverted.
Are we really heading for an illiterate, book-shy world? How many books do you have in your home? (I think we must have at least 2000.) It hurts me to read – online, of course – of the loss of such a paper treasury, but this seems to be the way of the world. 😦

Hi Richard,I too have a large library that fills a wall & is the overflow from my office. I must have over 2,000 (and that's just in my porn collection)! :DPS: I plan on donating them to the local senior center (the porn, that is):D:DPPS: Be glad you don't have to memorize any of them like the characters in Bradbury's book! 🙂

I read that news story. I was HORRIFIED! What I wouldn't give to read all those books!I've been asking people around me lately about their reading habits. Most, I've discovered, don't read books. They watch TV, peruse the internet, and very occasionally pick up a newspaper.I don't really know why that surprises me, though. Nothing is as it was.:frown:

I, too, have a library in my home – plus I always have 4 – 6 books from the public library in my home too. Thinking back I must admit that I don´t read as many novels and short stories as I used to, say 20 years ago.I don´t know why, though. (I still read quite a lot, but nowadays maybe one book a week or so)I feel that reading a book is slightly more difficult than it was. I tend to act a bit absent minded – wanting to turn the pages before reading them altogether. Maybe this is because of the Internet? I have gotten used to hyper links, and sort of expect books to behave in the same manner?Don´t know. I do hope the book survives this crisis – in fact i am confident that it will. The need to read books will still be here many years from now – and we just don´t read books online. I know – I have tried. Doesn´t work for me – and I know of no one who read e-books either.

So good to see that you three are book lovers too! There is simply no substitute, I believe, and a life without books is a life half-lived.

It's tragic. Me, I don't have a lot of books, usually can't afford them, but I do go to the library a lot and usually have about 4-6 books on the go at one time. I feel sickened sometimes when I pass by a bookstore and see all these great books on sale at a ridiculous price and still no one buys them.

A horrible thing, for whatever motives.Better if he would have opened his doors and given all the books away, saying "nobody reads anymore, so I'm going to try to help."

True, Edward. Probably would not have got so much publicity, but would have an easier conscience. San, I know exactly what you mean. I use the library mostly, except for those great books I pick up at riduculous prices! 🙂
