As you may know, there has been a problem with pet food in the U.S. Melamine-contaminated products have been associated with some animal deaths. Now, in today's New York Times, comes an article explaining just how and why melamine got into the food supply.

As American food safety regulators head to China to investigate how a chemical made from coal found its way into pet food that killed dogs and cats in the United States, workers in this heavily polluted northern city (Zhangqiu) openly admit that the substance is routinely added to animal feed as a fake protein.

Events like this demonstrate why food regulations are needed and why they need to be enforced.

It also makes me a little queasy about buying any Chinese food import!
