I just completed a Harris poll survey. During this I was shown two TV commercials and asked to rate them.
Both were objectionable. Considering why, I realized that it was the rapid edits and high-speed panning/zooming that turned me completely off.
That led me to thinking why I like using the web so much. Here the user has complete control over how long the image stays on the screen, and I like to keep it there for a long time. Especially when reading an interesting article or looking at a photograph.
Television is essentially a communicative form where you wholly abdicate control over the rate and processing of visual/audio stimuli. In small doses this may be acceptable but no more. Personally, as I have already written, I skip it altogether.
